UMR Statement on NIH Funding in the President’s Proposed FY26 Skinny Budget

May 2, 2025

The cuts proposed to the National Institutes of Health budget are shocking and would be devasting to the NIH, researchers doing groundbreaking work, patients and families hoping for cures, and America’s economy.

If they were to occur, the United States would be giving up our global leadership in biomedical research to competitor nations along with all the benefits our leadership brings to U.S. citizens, our economy, and our national security.

Congress must continue its bipartisan, bicameral support for medical research and the NIH. United for Medical Research will work with these leaders to ensure that the NIH remains the world’s premier health research agency and that its critical work continues.

UMR is a coalition of leading research institutions, patient and health advocates and private industry seeking strong and sustainable increases in funding for the National Institutes of Health in order to save and improve lives, advance innovation and fuel the economy.
