NIH’s Role in Sustaining the U.S. Economy

April 1, 2019

Research funded by the National Institutes of Health saves lives, improves health and offers hope to people the world-over affected by disease. This research funding also has a positive economic impact across the United States. For each of the past several years, UMR has commissioned an analysis of jobs and economic activity supported by NIH research funding in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. In fiscal year 2018, NIH research funding supported more than 433,000 jobs and nearly $74 billion in economic activity.
